Deriving from springs in a cliff almost 200 m high overlooking the plain, calcite-laden waters have created at Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) an unreal landscape, made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins.
The terraces were formed by running warm spring water containing calcium bicarbonate, at a temperature of 35C. When the water loses its carbon dioxide it leaves limestone deposits.
You will also visit Hierapolis, an open air museum, where you will see one of the largest ancient graveyard containing over 1200 sarcophagi, many of which are as big as a small house.
